The use of unconventional materials like buses, tiny homes, and shipping containers for residential construction has gained significant traction in recent years. These unique and affordable housing solutions offer the same level of comfort as traditional homes, with a wide range of customization options. However, long before this trend became popular, Jo Ann Ussery was breaking new ground in alternative housing.
In 1993, after losing her home in Benoit, Mississippi, Ussery embarked on an extraordinary journey. She transformed an old Boeing 727 into a stunning and fully functional living space, showcasing her creativity and determination.
From Tragedy to Triumph
Ussery’s incredible story began in the aftermath of her husband’s unexpected death. Left to care for her two children while facing financial challenges, she started searching for a new home. Initially, she considered purchasing a trailer as an affordable option. However, she quickly realized that trailers were too small to accommodate her growing family comfortably.
It was then that Bob, her brother-in-law and an air traffic controller, introduced an unconventional idea: living inside an airplane. Intrigued by the concept, Ussery visited a decommissioned Boeing 727 and immediately fell in love with it. Remarkably, the airplane was priced at just $2,000, including shipping. Inspired by the fact that Donald Trump also owned a private Boeing 727, she decided to name her new acquisition “Little Trump.”
Determined to make her vision a reality, Ussery embarked on a challenging but exciting project to convert the aircraft into a cozy and unique home. With a budget of less than $30,000 (around $60,000 today), she began a journey that required immense time, effort, and ingenuity.
Ussery carefully chose a scenic spot on her property to position the aircraft. She oriented the nose of the plane toward a picturesque lake and secured the tail with concrete to stabilize it during the renovation process.
Once the plane was firmly in place, she enthusiastically began the interior renovation. The aircraft provided an impressive 1,500 square feet of space and featured 76 windows, allowing natural light to flood the interior. Although the original windows were sealed shut, Ussery installed an air conditioning system to ensure a comfortable living environment.
Creating a Unique Living Space
Ussery reimagined the design of the plane’s interior to meet the needs of her family. She improved insulation, installed new flooring, and creatively repurposed parts of the aircraft to maximize functionality. For example, the plane’s overhead compartments and original bathroom were transformed into efficient storage and living spaces.
After completing extensive renovations, the aircraft was unrecognizable as anything other than a warm and inviting home. The revamped Boeing 727 included three bedrooms, a spacious living area, a fully equipped kitchen, and a functional laundry room. Ussery’s creativity didn’t stop there—she added unexpected luxuries like a phone and an oven to enhance the space.
One of the most remarkable aspects of her redesign was the cockpit’s transformation into a stunning master bathroom. Ussery installed a soaking tub in the cockpit, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding lake. The room was meticulously designed to create the illusion of floating above the water, providing an unparalleled sense of serenity and luxury.
Living the Dream
From 1995 to 1999, Ussery and her children lived in their unique airplane home. The experience was deeply rewarding, and the family enjoyed the many benefits of their one-of-a-kind living space. Inspired by the success of her project, Ussery eventually decided to open her home to the public, converting it into a museum to showcase her extraordinary creation.
Sadly, while attempting to relocate the aircraft a short distance, an unfortunate accident occurred. The airplane slipped off its transport carriage and broke apart, bringing an end to Ussery’s remarkable home.
Although her Boeing 727 home no longer exists, its legacy endures as a symbol of innovation and creativity. Ussery’s bold decision to transform an outdated aircraft into a functional and beautiful home is a testament to the power of vision and perseverance. Her story serves as an inspiration to those who dare to think outside the box and pursue unconventional solutions to life’s challenges.
Jo Ann Ussery’s journey illustrates that with determination, imagination, and hard work, it is possible to create something truly extraordinary. Her remarkable achievement continues to captivate and inspire people worldwide, proving that even the most unusual ideas can lead to incredible results when approached with passion and dedication.
