Skydiving star Freddy Chase recently broke the heartbreaking news that his wife, Devrey Jane LaRiccia-Chase, had passed away in a tragic accident. For 28 years, Devrey was a beloved part of her community, but her life was cut short due to a devastating incident. Freddy has since opened up about the events leading up to her untimely death, sharing details of the day she lost her life.
Devrey was a full-time skydiving instructor from California, known for her passion and dedication to the sport. Her husband, Freddy Chase, is a well-known athlete who has gained fame for his daredevil stunts and skydiving videos on social media. After the accident, Freddy took to his Instagram Stories to express his gratitude for the outpouring of love and support he had received in the wake of the tragedy.
“Hey everyone… I just want to thank all of you for the love and support I’ve been getting over the past few days,” Freddy began. “I know this love will continue to help me in the days ahead as I navigate this terrible event.” He then explained the heartbreaking events that took place right before Devrey’s passing.
Freddy described how excited Devrey was to begin her day at Skydive Perris, a place she loved to work. It was an ordinary day for her, as she prepared for her final tandem jump with a student. The day had gone as planned, and Devrey, like she had done many times before, deployed her parachute and prepared for a safe landing. However, something unexpected occurred that changed everything.
Freddy explained that while Devrey was descending toward the grass, she encountered what skydivers refer to as “dust devils”—small, invisible whirlwinds that can pose significant danger. “At around 40 feet, Devrey managed to avoid one dust devil, but unfortunately, she got caught in a second one,” Freddy said. “These tiny tornadoes, especially over grass, can become invisible, making them impossible to see.”
The force of the dust devil threw her parachute into an uncontrollable spin. Despite her vast experience and skill, Devrey was unable to regain control. Freddy shared that while Devrey was still alive when she hit the ground, she was unconscious. Tragically, she passed away from her injuries at the hospital later that day.
Freddy had initially posted a video of Devrey following her death but later removed it, saying it felt “too close” to the time of her passing. Reflecting on his loss, Freddy expressed his deep love for his wife, stating, “I loved that perfect girl.”
Before announcing the news of her death publicly, Freddy posted a touching tribute to Devrey on Instagram, sharing his pain and sorrow. “My soul, my love, my other half, my baby, my ride or die, my everything, my wife…” he wrote. “You were too perfect for this world, and God just wanted to bring you home. You were an angel among us, and now you’ve been called back to heaven.”
Freddy admitted that saying goodbye to Devrey was the hardest thing he has ever had to do. “Having to say goodbye to you, even for now, is something I’ll never fully come to terms with,” he added. “I love you so much, my now and forever angel.”
The post attracted a flood of comments from those who knew Devrey, as well as people who had never met her but were moved by Freddy’s words. One person commented, “I’m so sorry for your loss. This is absolutely heartbreaking.” Another added, “She was the kind of light this world needs more of right now.”
In the aftermath of her passing, Freddy has continued to post pictures and videos of his late wife on his Instagram Stories. Devrey’s family also created a GoFundMe page to help bring her body back to Maine, where she was born and raised. The campaign has raised over $53,000 to date, with many people expressing their love and support for the family during this difficult time. Devrey’s family expressed their gratitude to everyone who donated, saying, “We want to thank everyone who has contributed so far. Your love and support mean everything.”
Devrey was known not only for her skydiving but also for her love of attending raves, frequently sharing photos and videos from these events.
Freddy Chase, who has over 400,000 followers on Instagram and 2.5 million on TikTok, continues to share his extreme skydiving adventures with the world. His calm demeanor during dangerous stunts has earned him a loyal following. “I don’t really get nervous anymore,” he once shared with fans. “I’ve done over 800 skydives, so it’s pretty relaxing for me now.”
